The Basilica of Santa Prassede, also known as Saint Praxedes, is an early medieval church located in Rome, Italy. It is dedicated to Saint Praxedes and her sister Pudentiana, daughters of Saint Pudens, who are said to have provided burial for early martyrs in the catacombs of Rome. The Basilica was commissioned by Pope Hadrian I around the year 780, and it was built on the location of a previous house church, which was established by Pope Saint Pius I in the 2nd century. The architecture of the Basilica is a striking example of Byzantine art, featuring richly decorated interiors that reflect the period's artistic sophistication. Externally, the Basilica is unassuming, with a simple façade that belies the artistic wealth inside. Upon entering, visitors are greeted by a small, solemn nave that is a stark contrast to the ornate chapels that lie beyond. The interior of the Basilica is resplendent with stunning mosaics that portray various religious scenes. The apse mosaic, which dates back to the 9th century, is particularly notable for its depictions of Christ, the Virgin Mary, Saint Praxedes, and Pope Paschal. Another highlight is the Chapel of Saint Zeno, a funerary chapel that Pope Paschal I dedicated to his mother. The chapel's walls are adorned with intricate mosaics that depict scenes from the lives of various saints. However, the most remarkable feature of the Basilica is arguably the column of flagellation, believed to be the pillar upon which Jesus was flogged before his crucifixion. This relic is housed in a small room off the right aisle, adding another layer of historical significance to the Basilica. Throughout its history, the Basilica of Santa Prassede has undergone several renovations, the most significant of which were carried out in the 19th century. Despite these changes, the Basilica has retained much of its original charm and continues to be a place of immense historical and religious importance today. Visitors to the Basilica of Santa Prassede are often struck by the sense of tranquility that pervades the church, a testament to its long-standing role as a sanctuary for prayer and reflection. Whether you're drawn by the historical significance, the religious symbolism, or the sheer beauty of the mosaics, the Basilica of Santa Prassede is a must-visit destination in Rome.
