Ca' Pesaro is a palatial, Baroque-style edifice located in the heart of the enchanting city of Venice, Italy. It's nestled on the banks of the Grand Canal in the Santa Croce district. The palazzo is an architectural masterpiece and an emblem of the rich history of Venice. The construction of Ca' Pesaro began in the mid-17th century, commissioned by the noble Pesaro family. The design was the work of the renowned Venetian architect, Baldassare Longhena, who is also known for designing the iconic Basilica di Santa Maria della Salute. However, Longhena never saw the completion of this project as he died before it was finished. The construction was completed after almost a century in 1710 by Gian Antonio Gaspari. Ca' Pesaro's facade is a sight to behold, characterized by its grandeur and opulence. In typical Baroque style, the exterior is adorned with intricate carvings and statues, giving the building a sense of grandiosity and drama. The top floor features a series of arches and columns, reminiscent of the ancient Roman aqueducts. The interior of Ca' Pesaro is equally awe-inspiring. The grand marble staircase, decorated with statues and frescoes, leads to the piano nobile (main floor), which features high ceilings, ornate chandeliers, and expansive windows. Each room is lavishly decorated with antique furniture, paintings, and sculptures, reflecting the wealth and prestige of the Pesaro family. In 1902, Duchess Felicita Bevilacqua La Masa bequeathed Ca' Pesaro to the city of Venice with the intention of promoting young artists. Since then, it has been transformed into a public museum and gallery, housing the Modern Art Museum and the Oriental Art Museum. The Modern Art Museum showcases a collection of 19th and 20th-century paintings and sculptures, including works by renowned artists like Klimt, Chagall, and Kandinsky. The Oriental Art Museum, on the other hand, boasts one of the most important collections of Asian art in Europe, with over 30,000 pieces from Japan, China, and Indonesia. Interesting fact: during the 55th Venice Biennale in 2013, Ca' Pesaro hosted the first-ever exhibition of the Vatican. Ca' Pesaro continues to be a testament to Venice's rich cultural and artistic heritage, offering an enriching experience to art enthusiasts and history buffs alike. Its grand architecture and valuable art collections make it one of the must-visit landmarks in Venice.
