Caffè Florian is a quintessential symbol of Venice, Italy, steeped in history and allure. Founded in 1720, it holds the title of the oldest café in continuous operation not only in Italy but in the entire world. Located in the heart of Venice, under the arcades of the Procuratie Nuove in the famous St. Mark's Square, Caffè Florian is a gem that has stood the test of time. The café was opened under the name "Alla Venezia Trionfante" (To the Triumphant Venice) by Floriano Francesconi. However, it quickly became known simply as "Florian's" after its charismatic owner. Throughout its existence, the café has been a hotbed of intellectual and political activity. It was a meeting place for prominent figures like the Venetian playwright Carlo Goldoni, the French philosopher Rousseau, and the legendary Italian lover, Giacomo Casanova, who was known to frequent the café due to its policy of allowing women, making it a perfect spot for his romantic escapades. Caffè Florian's exterior is a stunning blend of Venetian and Oriental architectural styles, with its façade adorned with beautifully carved wooden panels. As you step inside, you're transported back in time. The interior is a luxurious spectacle of art and history, with its ornate mirrors, precious marbles, and frescoed ceilings. The café is divided into different rooms, each with its unique theme, like the "Sala del Parlamento", a testament to the café's historical role as a meeting place for intellectuals and politicians. Notably, Caffè Florian was the first place in Venice to serve coffee in the German/Austrian style and introduced Venetians to the concept of long black coffee. This was a significant departure from the Turkish style of making coffee that was prevalent at the time. It's also worth mentioning that the café has its orchestra, the Florian Ensemble, playing in St. Mark’s Square since 1893. The orchestra's enchanting performances add to the café's unique charm and ambiance. Even today, Caffè Florian remains a beloved institution, serving traditional Venetian cuisine and a variety of coffees. It stands as a monument to Venice's rich history and a testament to the city's enduring charm, offering visitors a taste of the grandeur of times past.
