The Cathedral of St. Michael and St. Gudula is a Roman Catholic church located in the heart of Brussels, Belgium. It is a striking example of Gothic architecture and is among the most important landmarks in the city. The cathedral traces its origins back to the 9th century when a chapel dedicated to St. Michael was built on the site. However, the cathedral as we know it today started taking shape from the 13th century onwards and was completed by the end of the 15th century. The cathedral is named after St. Michael and St. Gudula, the patron saints of Brussels. Interestingly, St. Gudula was a 7th-century saint who was born in Brussels and is said to have performed miracles during her lifetime. The exterior of the cathedral is majestic and imposing, with its two towers rising to a height of 64 meters. The façade is adorned with statues of the twelve apostles. The grand entrance is flanked by statues of St. Michael, the dragon-slaying archangel, and St. Gudula holding a lantern, a symbol of her faith. Once inside, the cathedral's grandeur continues with its stunning stained-glass windows, the oldest of which dates back to the 16th century. The windows depict various biblical scenes and the lives of the saints. The cathedral's pulpit, a masterpiece of Brabant Rococo, is an intricate wooden carving depicting Adam and Eve's expulsion from the Garden of Eden. The cathedral's crypt is another point of interest. It houses the remains of the Romanesque church that once stood on the site. The crypt showcases a fascinating blend of Romanesque and Gothic architecture, offering a glimpse into the cathedral's long history. Over the centuries, the Cathedral of St. Michael and St. Gudula has played host to numerous significant events, including royal weddings and state funerals. It is not just a place of worship, but also a symbol of Belgium's historical and cultural heritage. Today, it continues to inspire awe and reverence in its visitors, standing as a testament to the city's rich past and enduring faith.
