The Cologne City Hall (Kölner Rathaus), located in the heart of the city, is a testament to the rich and varied history of Cologne. Built in the 14th century, it is the oldest city hall in Germany that is still in use, with a documented history that spans over 900 years. The building, with its elaborate Gothic and Renaissance architectural styles, reflects the city's prosperous past. The exterior is a visual treat with its impressive façade, the highlight being the 61-meter-high tower adorned with over 130 stone statues representing various historical figures and patrons of the city. On entering the city hall, one can't help but admire the interior design that exudes a sense of grandeur and history. The grand council hall, known as the Hansasaal, is a prime example of medieval architecture with its high ceilings, grand chandeliers, and tall windows. Intricate wood carvings and ornate sculptures embellish the walls, depicting scenes from the city's history. One of the interesting facts about the Cologne Rathaus is that it was heavily damaged during World War II but was meticulously restored in the years following the war. The post-war restoration brought together the old and new in a harmonious blend. Modern elements were introduced, such as the glass pavilion added in the 1970s, which now serves as the main entrance, and the modern council chamber, added in 1953. The Rathaus also has a set of 48 bells, which were installed in the 14th century. These bells have a unique feature: they play a melody three times a day, creating a charming atmosphere in the city center. Over the centuries, the Cologne City Hall has been the place of grand civic ceremonies, celebrations, and political decisions. It stands as a symbol of the city's resilience and its commitment to preserving its heritage. It's not just a place of administration, but a living monument that tells the story of Cologne.
