Designmuseum Denmark is a unique cultural institution located in the heart of Copenhagen. Its rich history and remarkable architectural design make it a must-visit for anyone with an interest in design and arts. The museum was founded in the late 19th century, precisely in 1890, by Industriforeningen (now Dansk Industri), but it was not until 1926 that it moved to its present location, the former Royal Frederik's Hospital, an 18th-century rococo building. The hospital was designed by the architect Niels Eigtved in the 1750s and has been used for various purposes over the centuries. The exterior of the museum is a sight to behold, showcasing a perfect blend of the old and the new. The rococo building, with its yellow walls and white trim, is a beautiful example of classic Danish architecture. The courtyard features a modern sculpture, adding a contemporary touch to the historic setting. Upon entering, you are greeted by a blend of traditional and modern Danish design. The museum's interior is spacious and well-lit, with large windows allowing ample daylight and offering views of the peaceful courtyard. The museum's collection includes industrial design, furniture, and decorative art from the Middle Ages and up to the present, with a strong focus on Danish design. Designmuseum Denmark displays a wide range of objects that reflect the changes in society over time. It houses more than 240,000 objects, many of which are iconic pieces of Danish design. The collection includes works by renowned Danish designers like Arne Jacobsen, Poul Henningsen, and Hans Wegner. Moreover, the museum offers a variety of exhibitions, both permanent and temporary. One of the highlights is the Danish Chair Collection, showcasing over 100 chairs, all representing the development of Danish furniture design through the 20th century. The museum also contributes to research in design history, organises symposiums and lectures, and provides educational programs for schools. With its rich history, impressive collection, and beautiful architecture, Designmuseum Denmark is a testament to the importance and influence of design in Danish culture and society.
