FEZ Berlin, located in the city's southeast district of Treptow-Köpenick, is Europe's largest non-profit children's, youth and family center. This remarkable facility, sprawling over 100,000 square meters, offers a wide array of leisure and educational activities, making it a popular destination for families in the city and beyond. The history of FEZ Berlin dates back to the 1970s. Funded by the German Democratic Republic (GDR), the facility was initially known as "Pioneer Palace" and served as a recreational and extracurricular center for East Berlin's children. After the fall of the Berlin Wall, it was renamed FEZ Berlin and has since extended its reach to serve a broader demographic. The architecture of FEZ Berlin is a mix of modern design and historical elements. The exterior is characterized by its vast green spaces, including an adventure playground, a lake-side beach, sports fields, and numerous gardens, providing a tranquil setting within the bustling cityscape. The interior is equally impressive, housing various facilities such as a theater, a cinema, a planetarium, several workshops, and educational spaces. One notable feature of the center is the Astrid Lindgren Stage, named after the famed Swedish author. Here, children can immerse themselves in adaptations of Lindgren's works, with the stage regularly hosting puppet and theater shows. The FEZ also boasts a dedicated swimming pool complex, the Schwapp, with an indoor and outdoor pool, water slides, and a sauna, providing aquatic fun all year round. Throughout its history, FEZ Berlin has remained committed to its mission of fostering social learning and promoting cultural understanding. The center organizes over 500 events annually, ranging from international youth exchanges to festivals and concerts. It also facilitates educational programs and workshops on various topics, including science, arts, and environmental education. There's something for everyone at FEZ Berlin, whether it's exploring the world of technology in the Orbitall Space Center, getting creative in the various craft workshops, or enjoying childhood classics in the FEZino children's cinema. The center's robust offerings and inclusive atmosphere make it a cherished gem in the heart of Berlin, continuing to inspire and educate generations of young minds.
