Fotografiska is a renowned center for contemporary photography, located in the heart of Stockholm, Sweden. Founded in 2010 by brothers Jan and Per Broman, it's housed in a former customs house dating back to 1906, beautifully set on the waterfront with a stunning view of the city. The building's exterior is an impressive example of Art Nouveau architecture. Its white brick walls and grandiose arches provide a striking contrast to the modern steel and glass buildings surrounding it. Its imposing façade is softened by a series of vertical gardens, which add a touch of green to the urban landscape. Upon entering, the interior is a blend of the building's historical significance and modern Swedish design. The high ceilings, wide corridors, and natural light provide a serene ambiance. The main exhibition space spreads over four floors with large, airy rooms that allow the artwork to breathe. The interior is minimalistic, with the focus on the art rather than the building itself. Fotografiska's mission is to inspire a more conscious world through the power of photography. It hosts up to 25 exhibitions annually, showcasing a variety of genres from renowned photographers around the world. The exhibitions are thought-provoking, challenging audiences' perceptions and encouraging dialogue about societal issues. The center also offers educational workshops and courses for those interested in photography. It houses a well-stocked bookstore, offering a rich selection of photography books and prints. One of the highlights of Fotografiska is its award-winning restaurant, located on the top floor. Headed by renowned chef Paul Svensson, the restaurant offers spectacular views of the city and a menu based on seasonal, sustainable ingredients. Despite being relatively young, Fotografiska has quickly gained a reputation as one of the world's leading venues for photography. It has not only enriched Stockholm's cultural scene but has also become a must-visit destination for art lovers and photographers worldwide. In 2019, Fotografiska expanded internationally, opening a branch in New York City and planning for more in other global cities, thus spreading its vision of inspiring a more conscious world through photography. Fotografiska is more than just a photography museum. It's a vibrant cultural hub that celebrates creativity, encourages social dialogue, and promotes a sustainable lifestyle. Whether you're a photography enthusiast or not, it offers a unique experience that is sure to leave a lasting impression.
