The Grand Place, or Grote Markt, is the central square and the gem of Brussels, Belgium. Its history dates back to the 11th century when it was used as a marketplace, with traders selling textiles, bread, and meat. The square is renowned for its decorative and aesthetic wealth, and in 1998, it was recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Grand Place is surrounded by the city's Town Hall, the Breadhouse which houses the Brussels City Museum, and a series of opulent guild houses. These buildings bear testimony to the prosperity of the city's mercantile associations from the Middle Ages to the late Gothic period. The Town Hall, constructed in the 15th century, is the most iconic building on the square and a masterpiece of Gothic architecture. Its 96-meter high tower, adorned with a statue of Saint Michael slaying a demon, stands as a prominent feature of Brussels' skyline. The interior of the Town Hall is equally stunning, with rooms decorated with tapestries, sculptures, and paintings dating back to the 16th, 17th, and 18th centuries. The guild houses, with their ornate facades and gilded statues, were once the headquarters of the city's powerful trade associations. Each house has its unique history, like the House of the Dukes of Brabant, which is actually a group of seven houses, each with its distinctive name and facade decoration. The Breadhouse, contrary to its name, was never a bakery, but used to house the administrative offices of the Duke of Brabant. Currently, it is home to the Brussels City Museum, exhibiting artifacts, paintings, and tapestries that tell the tale of the city's history. The Grand Place is not just a feast for the eyes but also a hub of cultural activities. The most famous of these is the biennial "Carpet of Flowers," when the entire square is covered with a stunning floral carpet made up of about a million begonias. In the evening, the Grand Place transforms into a magical spectacle with a sound and light show that illuminates its grandeur. Whether it's day or night, the Grand Place in Brussels is a testament to the city's rich history, architectural brilliance, and vibrant culture.
