Burano, an island in the Venetian Lagoon, is a gem known for its vividly colored houses and its centuries-old handmade lace tradition. It is located in the northern part of the Venetian Lagoon, near Torcello, and is approximately 7 kilometers from Venice, a trip that takes about 40 minutes by vaporetto, the local water bus. The history of Burano dates back to the Roman times, but it flourished in the 16th century, when women on the island began making lace with needles. The lace was so exquisite that it was sought after by royalty across Europe. Today, the Lace Museum on the island pays homage to this delicate craft and keeps the tradition alive. The island’s other striking feature is its colorful houses. Legend has it that the fishermen of the island painted their houses in vibrant colors so they could see their way home in the dense fog of the lagoon. Another story suggests that the colors were used to demarcate property lines. The tradition continues today, with regulations in place to maintain the island's chromatic charm. If a resident wishes to paint their home, they must send a request to the government, who will respond with the particular colors permitted for that lot. Walking through the island is like entering a lively palette of a painter, filled with bright yellows, pinks, blues, and greens. The vibrancy is reflected not only in the exteriors but also the interiors of their homes, shops, and restaurants, creating a continuous stream of color that's nothing short of enchanting. One of the most famous spots in Burano is the leaning bell tower of the Church of San Martino, which dates back to the 17th century. The leaning effect is due to the soft, marshy ground on which the island is built. The church's interior is equally impressive, housing a famous painting by the Venetian artist Tiepolo. The island of Burano, with its rich history, charming atmosphere, and a riot of colors, is a photographer's dream and a traveler's delight. Despite its increasing popularity, it has managed to retain its local character, making it an enchanting getaway from the bustling city of Venice.
