The Jardin d'Acclimatation is an enchanting 20-hectare park nestled in the heart of the Bois de Boulogne in Paris, France. It was opened by Napoleon III and Empress Eugénie in 1860, and was initially a zoo and a place for the acclimatization and showcasing of exotic animals and plants brought from France's colonies. The garden was inspired by London's Crystal Palace, which was designed to house the Great Exhibition in 1851. The park quickly evolved into an amusement park, featuring a variety of attractions including puppet shows, shooting galleries, a mirror maze, and even an 'ethnological' garden, where indigenous people from France's colonies were displayed in a controversial 'human zoo'. The garden also hosted the first manned flight, a hot air balloon ascent in 1873. During World War II, the park was taken over by the German army and was used as a depot. After the liberation, it was rehabilitated and became a place for relaxation, fun, and discovery. Today, it offers more than 500 animals, 18 hectares of walking paths, and a variety of funfair-styled games. The exterior of the park is a picturesque combination of lush greenery, vibrant flower beds, and winding paths. Several beautifully designed buildings dot the landscape, including a charming aviary and a miniature railway station. The interior of the park, on the other hand, is a delightful mix of educational and recreational spaces. A petting zoo allows children to interact with farm animals, while the science museum offers interactive exhibits. The Jardin d'Acclimatation underwent a significant renovation in 2018, transforming it into a modern amusement park while preserving its historic charm. The renovation brought in four major attractions, namely the Steamers, the Speed Rockets, the Windships, and the Aeroplanes, all of which pay homage to Jules Verne's "Extraordinary Voyages". Today, the park is filled with attractions for both children and adults, from enchanting boat rides on the Enchanted River to thrilling roller coasters. Despite its turbulent past, the Jardin d'Acclimatation remains a beloved Parisian landmark, a testament to the French love for beauty, nature, and leisure. It is a place where history, nature, and amusement intersect, providing a delightful escape from the hustle and bustle of the city.
