"Libreria Acqua Alta," or "The High Water Bookstore," is one of the most enchanting and unique bookstores in the world, located in the heart of the beautiful city of Venice, Italy. The name, which literally translates to "The Library of High Water," reflects its unique relationship with the city's notorious flooding. Instead of battling against the tide, this bookstore embraces it. The history of this unusual bookstore dates back to the late 20th century. Luigi Frizzo, a passionate lover of books, opened the Libreria Acqua Alta in 2004. His goal was to create a place that not only sold books but also protected them from the city's frequent floods. His solution was a unique one: instead of traditional shelves, the books are stored in waterproof bins, bathtubs, and even gondolas. In the event of acqua alta - the seasonal high water that floods Venice - the books simply float, protecting them from water damage. The exterior of the bookstore is as fascinating as its history. Nestled in a quiet corner of Castello, one of Venice's six districts, it is easy to miss the unassuming entrance. A rustic wooden door opens into a world of literary treasures, and the walls outside are adorned with faded posters and book covers, hinting at the wonders inside. Upon entering, you are greeted with an eclectic and chaotic mix of new and used books stacked from floor to ceiling. The interior is a maze of rooms filled with books on every subject imaginable, from art and history to fiction and philosophy. Each room is a treasure trove waiting to be explored, with books stacked high in gondolas and bathtubs and spilling onto the floor. One of the bookstore’s most iconic features is a staircase made entirely of old encyclopedias and damaged books. This 'staircase of knowledge' leads to a small courtyard with a stunning view of a Venetian canal. It is here that you can find the shop's resident cats lounging among the books. The Libreria Acqua Alta is a testament to the enduring love for literature and a unique adaptation to the environment. It is more than a bookstore; it is an emblem of Venice's resilience and a sanctuary for book lovers worldwide. Its charm lies not only in its vast collection of books but also in its quirky and unconventional approach to preserving them. It is truly a must-visit spot in Venice for bibliophiles and tourists alike.
