National Library of Spain
The National Library of Spain, or Biblioteca Nacional de España, is a beautiful historic entity located in the heart of Madrid. Established in 1712 by King Philip V, it is one of the largest libraries in the world and is the largest in Spain, housing an impressive collection of over 26 million items including books, maps, manuscripts, newspapers, and even musical scores.
The library's exterior is a grand architectural spectacle. Designed in the 19th century by architect Francisco Jareño, the building is an excellent example of neoclassical architecture. The façade is adorned with a magnificent portico featuring Corinthian columns. Two magnificent stone lions, sculpted by Agapit Vallmitjana i Abarca, guard the entrance, symbolizing the strength and depth of knowledge within its walls.
Inside, the library is a labyrinth of knowledge, with endless rows of books, manuscripts, and maps spanning centuries. The Reading Room, with its elegant wooden furnishings and rows of reading lamps, provides a serene atmosphere for study and research. The library also houses a Museum where visitors can view a rotating selection of items from the library's vast collections.
The National Library of Spain is not just a library, but a cultural institution. It has the responsibility of conserving, cataloging, and disseminating information about Spain’s historical heritage. It also carries out research and development activities to promote reading and literacy in Spain.
The library holds some of Spain's most treasured documents, like the "Cantar de Mio Cid," the oldest preserved Spanish epic poem, and the "Codex Vigilanus," a 10th-century codex containing one of the earliest accounts of the Spanish language.
The National Library of Spain is a treasure chest of knowledge, preserving Spain's rich literary and historical heritage, and providing a sanctuary for scholars, researchers, and book lovers. Whether you're a history enthusiast, a literature lover, or simply a curious traveler, a visit to the National Library of Spain is a fascinating journey through the annals of Spanish history and culture.
