The Palace of Culture and Science, known in Polish as "Pałac Kultury i Nauki" (PKiN), is a landmark and symbol of Warsaw, Poland. It's the tallest building in the country and one of the tallest on the European continent. It was constructed under the direction of Soviet leader Joseph Stalin as a "gift from the Soviet people to the Polish nation." The construction began in 1952 and was completed in 1955. The building's design was inspired by Polish historicism and American art deco high-rise buildings. The exterior, standing at 237 meters high (including the spire), is adorned with mosaics, sculptures, and architectural details, carved in stone, that represent the Soviet and Polish cooperative labor efforts. The palace hosts various public and cultural events, including concerts, theaters, cinemas, sports clubs, universities, and authorities of the Polish Academy of Sciences. The Congress Hall (Sala Kongresowa) and Concert Hall (Sala Koncertowa) are considered the most significant on the inside. They have hosted numerous events, including concerts by Rolling Stones and Leonard Cohen. The interior is as grand as the exterior, with marble floors and walls adorned with chandeliers and intricate mosaics. The Palace of Culture and Science has over 3,000 rooms, including offices, institution headquarters, and the Polish Academy of Sciences. There are also two private universities, three theaters, a multiplex cinema with eight screens, four museums, a swimming pool, an auditorium, and a congress hall. The palace also boasts a viewing terrace on the 30th floor, providing a panoramic view of the city. This 'trzydziestka' (meaning 'thirty') is a popular tourist attraction, offering an impressive view of Warsaw's urban landscape. The Palace of Culture and Science, despite its controversial origins, has undeniably become a significant part of Warsaw's identity. It is a monument to history, a center for culture and science, and an architectural marvel that continues to captivate locals and tourists alike.
