Once upon a time, in the vibrant city of Prague, stood the majestic Petrin Hill, a 318-meter-high hill in the center of the city, offering panoramic views of the picturesque cityscape. The history of Petrin Hill dates back to the Middle Ages, when it was mainly covered with vineyards and orchards, serving as the city’s important source of fruits and wine. In the 12th century, the hill witnessed the construction of the famous Hunger Wall by Charles IV, a major landmark. This defensive wall was built during a famine period, hence its name, and it was a project to provide employment and food for the city's poor. The hill became a recreational area during the reign of Emperor Rudolf II in the 16th century. This 63.5-metre-tall steel framework tower, with 299 steps leading up to a viewing platform, quickly became a major tourist attraction, offering a splendid bird's eye view of the city. The exterior of Petrin Hill is a breathtaking sight, with its lush greenery, colourful flower beds, well-maintained gardens and the towering Petrin Observation Tower. The hill also houses a mirror maze and the Stefanik Observatory, where tourists can explore the universe through a telescope. The interiors of the structures on Petrin Hill, especially the Observation Tower, are equally fascinating. The tower's interior is a simple yet sturdy steel framework. The spiral staircase leading to the top is an exciting climb, ending at the viewing platform which presents an uninterrupted 360-degree view of Prague. Petrin Hill is not just a significant historical site, but also a leisure and educational hub, making it an integral part of Prague's cultural and social life.
