The Pont Alexandre III is one of the most stunning and ornamental bridges in Paris. Named after the Russian Tsar, Alexander III, the bridge symbolizes the Franco-Russian alliance established in 1892. The first stone was laid by Tsar Nicholas II, son of Alexander III in 1896 and it was inaugurated in 1900. The bridge spans the Seine, connecting the Champs-Elysées quarter with the Invalides and Eiffel Tower quarter. It is widely regarded as the most extravagant bridge in the city and is classified as a French Monument Historique. The bridge's exuberant Art Nouveau design features elaborate decorations including cherubs, nymphs, winged horses, and intricate floral motifs. The single-span steel arch of the bridge is 40 meters high and 107 meters long, its expanse decorated with ornate lampposts and sculptures. At each end of the Pont Alexandre III, large gilded statues on 17-meter-high granite pillars stand as sentinels. These monumental pylons are adorned with gilded bronze sculptures of Fames restraining Pegasus, symbolizing the arts, sciences, commerce, and industry. The bridge's exterior is painted in a distinctive light green color, enhancing its ornate gold detailing and brightly colored mosaics. The interior of the bridge, while not accessible to the public, is an engineering marvel in itself, consisting of a complex steel and concrete structure that supports the bridge's weight. Interesting facts about Pont Alexandre III include its design being chosen from a competition. The winning architects, Joseph Cassien-Bernard and Gaston Cousin, were required to ensure the bridge's design didn't obstruct the view of the Champs-Élysées or the Invalides. The bridge's grandeur and beauty have also made it a popular location for films. It has been featured in movies like Midnight in Paris and Anastasia, and even in music videos, such as Adele's "Someone Like You." Pont Alexandre III is more than just a crossing point over the Seine; it's a testament to the artistic and engineering prowess of the era it was built in. It stands as an iconic symbol of Paris, drawing in locals and tourists alike to marvel at its intricate designs and the stunning views it offers of the city.
