Ponte Sant'Angelo, originally known as Pons Aelius, is a bridge that spans the River Tiber in Rome, Italy. It's a pedestrian bridge that links the city center to Castel Sant'Angelo, a circular fortress that was originally commissioned by the Roman Emperor Hadrian as a mausoleum for himself and his family. The bridge was constructed between 134-139 AD by Roman Emperor Hadrian, who used it to connect the left bank of Rome to his newly constructed mausoleum, which later became the Castel Sant'Angelo. The Bridge of Angels, as it is often referred to, is one of the most scenic spots in Rome, offering stunning views of the Vatican and the historic city center. Its current name, Ponte Sant'Angelo, was given during the Middle Ages due to the legend that an angel appeared on the roof of the castle to announce the end of a plague. The Ponte Sant'Angelo is a significant architectural masterpiece not just because of its antiquity, but also because of its decorations. It was during the 17th century that Pope Clement IX commissioned designs from one of the most prominent baroque sculptors, Gian Lorenzo Bernini, for ten angels holding instruments of the passion of Christ. Each angel is unique, representing a different aspect of Christ's suffering. The bridge itself is made of travertine marble, a form of limestone deposited by mineral springs. It is a solid structure with five arches and is adorned with beautiful statues. Each end of the bridge is marked by elaborate pillars, further adding to its grandeur. The interior of the Castel Sant'Angelo at the end of the bridge is equally impressive. It houses a collection of Renaissance furnishings, paintings, military memorabilia, and medieval firearms. The castle itself is a cylindrical building, with its central core remaining from the original mausoleum. The upper floors offer panoramic views of Rome. Ponte Sant'Angelo has witnessed the rise and fall of empires, survived wars and floods, and yet still stands as a testament to Rome's enduring history. Whether you're interested in architecture, history, or simply want to enjoy a scenic walk, Ponte Sant'Angelo is a must-visit destination in Rome.
