The Powder Tower, also known as Prašná brána, is a magnificent Gothic edifice standing tall in Prague, the capital city of the Czech Republic. Located in the heart of the city, the tower is one of the original 13 city gates and dates back to the 11th century. It owes its present name to the 17th century when it was used to store gunpowder. The tower was conceived as a decorative entrance rather than a defensive fortification. It was begun in 1475 during the reign of King Vladislaus II. Built on the site of an 11th-century gate, one of the city's 13 original city gates, its construction was commissioned by the city council. The Powder Tower was designed by the prominent architect of the time, Matej Rejsek, who modeled it after the Old Town Bridge Tower. The exterior of the Powder Tower is a gothic marvel, covered in intricate sculptures and adorned with statues of various rulers, such as George of Poděbrady and Vladislaus II. Standing 65 meters tall, it offers a stunning panoramic view of the city from its gallery. The tower is made of sandstone, which has weathered over the centuries, giving it a distinct, antique charm. The interior of the tower, accessible by a spiral staircase of 186 steps, holds historical exhibitions spread over its four floors. The exhibitions depict the history of the tower and the Royal Route, the coronation route of Czech kings. The Royal Route started from the Powder Tower, went across Old Town Square, Charles Bridge, and ended at Prague Castle. The first floor displays the original sculptures from the tower. In the 17th century, the tower was used as a storage place for gunpowder, which is how it got its current name. It suffered significant damage during the Prussian occupation in 1757 but was restored in the 19th century. Today, the Powder Tower is one of Prague's most distinctive landmarks. It serves not only as a gateway to the Old Town but also as a significant symbol of Prague's rich history. Its architecture, historical significance, and impressive views over the city make it a must-visit for any traveler to Prague.
