Prague Castle
Prague Castle, a UNESCO World Heritage site, has been an important symbol of the Czech state for over a thousand years. It was established in the 9th century by Prince Bořivoj of the Premyslid Dynasty. Throughout the centuries, it has been home to Kings of Bohemia, Holy Roman Emperors, and presidents of Czechoslovakia and the Czech Republic.
The castle complex, sprawling over 70,000 square meters, is recognized by the Guinness Book of Records as the largest ancient castle in the world. The architecture of the castle ranges from the remaining Romanesque-style buildings from the 10th century, such as the Basilica of St George, through Gothic modifications in the 14th century, represented by the cathedral of Saint Vitus, to the addition of palaces and gardens in the 16th century during the Renaissance.
The exterior of Prague Castle is a magnificent sight with its spires, towers, and palaces dominating the city’s skyline. The highlight is surely the Gothic revival-style St. Vitus Cathedral, with its stunning stained-glass windows and ornate detailing. The castle walls provide panoramic views of the city.
The interior of the castle is just as grandiose. The Old Royal Palace's Vladislav Hall, once used for coronations, banquets, and even jousting tournaments, impresses with its vast size and intricate ribbed vaulting. The Picture Gallery houses a collection of works from the former royal collections. The complex also includes the St. George's Basilica, a Romanesque monument with an austere stone interior, and Golden Lane, a picturesque street of small houses where goldsmiths, fusiliers, and even Franz Kafka once lived.
Prague castle, with its rich history and stunning architecture, is a testament to the city's past and its cultural importance. It continues to awe visitors with its grandeur and remains a symbol of Czech heritage and national identity.
