Promenade Plantée, also known as the Coulée verte René-Dumont, is a unique and enchanting feature of Paris known for its incredible blend of urban architecture and lush greenery. Inaugurated in 1993, the Promenade Plantée is a 4.7 km (2.9 miles) long elevated linear park built on the old Vincennes railway line, stretching from Bastille to the eastern edge of Paris. It was the first green space of its kind in the world and has since inspired similar projects, like New York's High Line. The history of the Promenade Plantée is closely tied to the history of the Vincennes railway line, which was in operation from 1859 to 1969. As rail traffic declined, the old railway fell into disuse and was eventually abandoned. However, in the 1980s, inspired by the idea of transforming this derelict space into a public park, the city of Paris initiated the Promenade Plantée project. The exterior of the Promenade Plantée is a sight to behold. Lined with a variety of flora, including cherry trees, lavender, rose bushes, and bamboo, it offers a tranquil respite from the bustling city. The walkway is interspersed with art installations, benches, and even ponds, providing a unique combination of urban and natural landscapes. As for the interior, the promenade is divided into different sections, each with its distinctive character. The elevated portion, known as the Viaduc des Arts, features a series of arches housing art galleries, design studios, and boutiques. As you stroll along, you'll encounter the Jardin de Reuilly, a beautiful public garden with a large water feature that's perfect for picnics. Further along, you'll find the Gare de Reuilly, a former railway station turned into a charming garden. One of the most intriguing aspects of the Promenade Plantée is the way it weaves through the city, offering unique perspectives of Paris. From the elevated walkway, you can glance into apartment windows, peer down at bustling streets, and enjoy panoramic views of the city skyline. In essence, the Promenade Plantée represents the successful marriage of urban regeneration and environmental sustainability. It is not only a testament to Paris's commitment to green spaces but also a fascinating piece of the city's history, repurposed for the enjoyment of locals and tourists alike.
