The Rautenstrauch-Joest Museum, also known as the Museum of World Cultures, is an ethnographic museum located in Cologne, Germany. This museum is named after its original benefactors, Wilhelm Joest and Eugen Rautenstrauch. Joest was an ardent traveler who collected numerous artifacts during his journeys around the world. Following his death, the collection was inherited by his sister, Adele Rautenstrauch, who donated it to the city of Cologne. The Rautenstrauch-Joest Museum traces its origins back to 1901, when it was first opened to the public. The original building was severely damaged during World War II, leading to the closure of the museum. However, it was reopened in 2010 in a new, larger, and modern building in the city's Neustadt-Nord district. The modern building is a sight to behold, with its sleek glass and metal facade that reflects the surrounding cityscape. The museum stretches over two floors that cover a total area of 3600 square meters. Its exterior is adorned with a unique wave-like roof design that stands out from the neighboring buildings. The interior of the museum is just as impressive, with a spacious layout and modern, minimalist design. The museum's collections are diverse and unique, comprising over 60,000 objects from across the globe. It's divided into various sections, each dedicated to different geographical regions, including Africa, America, Asia, and Oceania. These collections include items like masks, sculptures, textiles, and musical instruments, providing a glimpse into the cultures and traditions of various societies. The Rautenstrauch-Joest Museum is more than just a display of artifacts; it's an educational journey that promotes understanding and respect for different cultures. The museum also hosts temporary exhibitions, workshops, and lectures, further contributing to its educational mission. One of the museum's notable features is the "Culture of Silence" exhibition, which explores the concept of death across different cultures. Visitors are invited to walk through a recreated Columbian burial chamber, interact with an African ancestor shrine, and discover Japanese death rituals. The Rautenstrauch-Joest Museum is not just a place to visit; it's a place to learn, explore, and appreciate the diversity of human culture. The museum's unique blend of traditional artifacts and modern presentation make it a must-visit destination for those interested in the world's various cultures.
