Riegrovy Sady, named after František Ladislav Rieger, a prominent Czech nationalist and politician of the 19th-century, is a beautiful park that sprawls across the Prague 2 and Prague 3 districts, serving as a unique window into the history, culture, and daily life of Prague. The park was established in 1902, on a hillside in the middle of the city, providing stunning views of the Old Town, the Prague Castle, and the Petřín Tower. One of the most prominent features of the park is a large wooden gazebo known as the "Marjánka". This gazebo was built in the late 19th century and was originally used as a restaurant and a dance hall. Nowadays, it stands as a symbol of the park's rich history, attracting both locals and tourists. Riegrovy Sady also features a large beer garden, known for its sociable atmosphere and expansive city views. It's a popular spot for locals to kick back and relax, especially during the summer months. The park was also home to a public swimming pool, which was unfortunately demolished in the 1950s. The park’s interior is a feast for the eyes. Amid its wide swathes of green, you’ll find a mix of mature trees, landscaped gardens, and paved walkways. The park also contains a number of statues and memorials, including a monument to František Ladislav Rieger himself. The monument, which was revealed in 1913, features a bronze statue of Rieger sitting on a stone bench, forever looking out over the city he loved. The park is also home to two athletic stadiums and a large outdoor screen that shows major sporting events, which adds to the lively atmosphere. In addition, it hosts a regular farmers’ market and various cultural events throughout the year. Over the course of its history, Riegrovy Sady has seen its fair share of changes and has weathered many storms. Despite this, it remains a beloved part of the city, offering a tranquil respite from the hustle and bustle of Prague. Whether you're a history buff, nature lover, or just looking for a place to unwind, Riegrovy Sady is a must-visit destination.
