The Basilica of the Sacred Heart, or Sacré-Cœur Basilica, is a majestic monument nestled on the highest point in the city, the Butte Montmartre in Paris, France. Its history is as fascinating as the panoramic view it offers of the city. The idea of constructing the Sacré-Cœur was born in the aftermath of the Franco-Prussian War (1870-1871) and the chaotic Paris Commune of 1871. The French Parliament vowed to construct this basilica as a sign of penance for the moral decay that was thought to have led to these misfortunes. The construction started in 1875 and was completed in 1914, although its consecration was delayed until the end of World War I in 1919. The basilica's architecture is a controversial, yet enticing blend of Romanesque and Byzantine styles. Architect Paul Abadie designed the basilica with inspiration from Venice's San Marco Basilica and the Hagia Sophia in Istanbul. Its travertine stone facade is adorned with equestrian statues of French national saints, Joan of Arc and King Saint Louis IX, and resists weathering due to a chemical reaction that ensures it remains white even with weather and pollution. Inside, the Sacré-Cœur Basilica is just as awe-inspiring. The ceiling is adorned with the largest mosaic in France, measuring about 480 m². Crafted by Luc-Olivier Merson, the mosaic depicts Christ with outstretched arms, accompanied by the Virgin Mary and Joan of Arc. The crypt, another fascinating feature of the basilica, houses relics and tombs of notable figures. A visit to the Sacré-Cœur Basilica isn't complete without climbing to the dome. With 300 steps and no elevator, it's a strenuous journey, but the breathtaking panoramic view of Paris from the top is worth the effort. From here, you can see up to 30 kilometers on a clear day, presenting the city of love in all its glory.
