Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari, commonly referred to as the Frari, is one of the most significant churches in Venice, Italy. Its distinctive red brick structure, towering campanile, and its position in the San Polo district, make it an unmistakable landmark of the city. The church was constructed by the Franciscan order of monks, who arrived in Venice around 1222. The original structure was a small, temporary building, but by 1250, the order had grown significantly, and a larger church was commissioned. The current structure was begun in 1340 and completed in 1443, becoming one of the greatest expressions of Gothic architecture in the city. The exterior of the Frari is quite stark, a typical characteristic of Franciscan churches. However, the interior is a treasure trove of artistic masterpieces. As you first enter, you are greeted by a nave of impressive height and length, with a wooden ceiling decorated with golden stars against a blue background. The walls are adorned with numerous chapels, each filled with works of art from renowned artists. One of the most significant artworks inside the Frari is Titian's 'Assumption of the Virgin,' which dominates the high altar. This masterpiece, completed in 1518, is considered one of the most important paintings of the Venetian Renaissance period. Other notable works include the 'Madonna di Ca’ Pesaro' by Titian and the 'Madonna and Child with Saints' by Giovanni Bellini. The Frari is also known for its tombs and monuments. The church is the final resting place of several prominent figures, including the aforementioned Titian, the sculptor Antonio Canova, and the composer Claudio Monteverdi. The tomb of Doge Francesco Foscari, one of the longest-reigning doges in Venetian history, is also located here. Moreover, Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari is home to a historic organ, built by Gaetano Callido in 1795, one of the most famous Venetian organ builders of the 18th century. Its sonority is said to be exceptional, and it is still used for liturgical celebrations and concerts. The Frari is more than just a church; it's an art gallery, a tomb, a symbol of Venetian history and culture. Its austere exterior belies the wealth of beauty that lies within, making it a must-visit destination for any visitor to Venice.
