In 1477, Pope Sixtus IV commissioned its construction, and it was consecrated and dedicated to the Virgin Mary's Assumption in 1483, hence the name "Sistine" derived from "Sixtus". The exterior of the chapel is unremarkable and simplistic, with a sturdy brick façade, lacking the grandeur one might expect. The chapel's dimensions mirror those of the Temple of Solomon, as described in the Old Testament. Despite its unadorned exterior, it holds a wealth of artistic treasures within its walls. The interior of the Sistine Chapel is where the true magic lies. It is adorned with frescoes by some of the most celebrated artists of the High Renaissance, including Botticelli, Ghirlandaio, and Perugino. However, the most awe-inspiring sight is the ceiling and altar wall. The ceiling, painted by the legendary Michelangelo between 1508 and 1512, showcases a series of nine scenes from the Book of Genesis, including the iconic "Creation of Adam" where God and Adam's fingers are almost touching. Despite having no experience as a fresco painter, Michelangelo accepted Pope Julius II's commission, creating one of the greatest masterpieces of western art. Two decades later, Michelangelo was summoned back to the chapel to paint "The Last Judgment" on the altar wall.
