The Strahov Monastery, a historical building that stands as a jewel in the heart of Prague, has a history that dates back to the 12th century. Founded in 1140 by Bishop John of Prague, and Duke Vladislav II, it was initially built for the Premonstratensians, a religious order of canons. Over the centuries, despite several calamities like fires and wars, it has managed to endure, serving as a testament to the city's resilience. The exterior of the Strahov Monastery is a splendid example of Baroque architecture. The imposing façade, with its soft cream color and pale green domes, is adorned with statues and intricate carvings, while the lush gardens offer a tranquil retreat. Its most prominent feature is the Basilica of the Assumption of Our Lady, with its twin towers and stunning frescoes. Inside, the Strahov Monastery houses one of the world's most beautiful libraries, with two main halls: the Theological Hall and the Philosophical Hall. The Theological Hall, built in the 17th century, holds over 18,000 religious texts. Its ornately decorated ceiling, adorned with frescoes depicting biblical scenes, is a sight to behold. The Philosophical Hall, on the other hand, is a magnificent example of Classicist architecture. Constructed in the 18th century, it contains over 42,000 ancient philosophical texts. Its grandeur is accentuated by the breathtaking ceiling fresco, "The Struggle of Mankind towards Truth". The Monastery also houses an exquisite cabinet of curiosities, which includes a collection of sea creatures, minerals, and insects, as well as a gallery with a collection of Gothic art from the 14th to 16th century. Interestingly, Strahov Monastery also boasts a brewery, the Strahov Monastic Brewery, which has been brewing beer since the 13th century. It was restored in 2000 and now produces some of the best craft beers in Prague. Today, the Strahov Monastery continues to serve as a spiritual haven, a historical monument, and a cultural hub, attracting scholars, pilgrims, and tourists from all over the world. Its timeless beauty and rich history make it an unmissable landmark in the city of Prague.
