The Rijksmuseum, known as the Dutch National Museum, is undoubtedly one of Amsterdam's grandest and most popular destinations. It is dedicated to the arts, crafts, and history. It has a large collection of paintings from the Dutch Golden Age and a substantial collection of Asian art. The Rijksmuseum was founded in The Hague in 1800 and moved to Amsterdam in 1808, where it was first located in the Royal Palace and later in the Trippenhuis. The current main building was designed by Pierre Cuypers and first opened its doors in 1885. The museum has on display 8,000 objects of art and history, from their total collection of 1 million objects from the years 1200–2000, among which are some masterpieces by Rembrandt, Frans Hals, and Johannes Vermeer. The building itself is a masterpiece. It's a blend of both Gothic and Renaissance styles, adorned with references to Dutch art history. The exterior facade is adorned with statues representing art, science, and history, and the entire building is surrounded by gardens, water features, and a spacious courtyard. The museum underwent a ten-year, €375 million restoration which completed in 2013. Upon entering the museum, you will be greeted by the 'Gallery of Honour', an extended corridor directed towards a clear focal point: the 'Night Watch' gallery. This gallery houses 'The Night Watch', the most famous painting by Rembrandt. As you explore further, you will find rooms filled with doll houses, a wealth of silverware, the best Delftware, and countless artefacts like ship models and classic photographs. The Asian Pavilion is housed in a separate wing of the museum, which showcases a collection that spans thousands of years, with objects from China, Japan, Indonesia, India, Vietnam, and Thailand. There is also the Cuypers Library, which is the biggest and oldest art history library in the Netherlands. The Rijksmuseum also has an impressive outdoor sculpture garden, a shop, and a Michelin-starred restaurant, known as Rijks, where you can sample some traditional Dutch cuisine. Being a famous traveler, I have visited countless museums around the world, but the Rijksmuseum holds a special place in my heart. Its combination of grand architecture, rich history, and priceless art pieces provide a cultural feast that is as satisfying as it is educational. It’s not just a museum, it’s a journey through time, a journey through Dutch art and history.
