Tyresta National Park and Nature Reserve, located approximately 20 kilometers south of central Stockholm, Sweden, is an oasis of wilderness in the midst of urban development. Spread across 50 square kilometers, Tyresta is home to one of the largest untouched forests in southern Sweden. The park was officially established as a National Park in 1993, although the nature reserve had been protecting the area since 1979. The park's ancient forest dates back over 400 years, with some trees believed to be older than 600 years. These ancient trees are a mixture of pine, birch, and spruce, creating a dense woodland teeming with diverse wildlife. More than 8,000 species of plants, fungi, lichens, and animals can be found in Tyresta, including rare insects that depend on the ancient forest and its dead wood. The landscape of Tyresta is marked by deep valleys created by the Ice Age, and more than 300 lakes and ponds dot the park. The park's largest lake, Bylsjön, is a popular spot for visitors who enjoy swimming or picnicking on its shores. Inside Tyresta, there are over 55 kilometers of marked trails for hiking. The trails vary in length and difficulty, making it suitable for families, seasoned hikers, and everyone in between. Some trails are even wheelchair accessible. Among these trails, the most popular is the 13.6-kilometer 'Tyrestaleden', which offers a circular route through the park, passing through old growth forest, across rocky outcrops, and alongside tranquil lakes. A major event in Tyresta's recent history was the great forest fire of 1999, which devastated a large part of the park. This natural disaster was turned into a learning opportunity, with a portion of the burned area left untouched to allow natural regeneration. Today, this area serves as a living laboratory for scientists studying the forest's recovery. Tyresta village, located at the park's entrance, is a picturesque settlement that dates back to the 18th century. Here, visitors can explore charming wooden houses, a traditional smithy, and a café. The park's visitor center is also located in the village. Here, you can find information about the park's flora, fauna, and trails, and even join guided tours. Despite being close to the hustle and bustle of Stockholm, Tyresta National Park and Nature Reserve offers a peaceful retreat into nature.
