Berlin, the capital of Germany, has a rich and complex history. Founded in the 13th century, it became the capital of the Kingdom of Prussia, the German Empire, the Weimar Republic, and the Third Reich. The city was heavily bombed during World War II and subsequently divided into East and West Berlin by the Berlin Wall during the Cold War. The fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 marked the beginning of German reunification, and Berlin was once again named the capital of a unified Germany in 1990.
